REVIEW! Double Action Boogaloo

Over the years, third person shooters have always been a hit or miss for me. Games like Resident Evil 4, Max Payne, Dead Space, Gears of War, and any Tom Clancy games, help to shape and define a generation of third person shooters. However, every so often, there comes a clone of these kinds of games that is just a lot of fun to play. Games like Double Action Boogaloo are a diamond in the rough, fun action shooters that incorporate third/first person action. Best part, it’s FREE! Yes, it’s free and you can download it from Steam, here. The game features over the top action a la John Woo (with doves!) and even sliding and rolling. I’ve spent some time with this game and I’ve gotta say I’m having a lot of fun.

Guns. Guns make the world go ‘round. Well, the world of DA:B that is. You can choose from akimbo pistols, a shotgun, an assault rifle, a submachine gun and even an uzi to eliminate your foes. Melee weapons are absent from the game and are whittled down to only guns. It feels got to wield akimbo pistols, jump through the air, killing dudes left and right. You really do feel like you’re in a John Woo movie after about an hour.

If you’ve played Gunz: Online, then you will probably feel familiar with this game. For those of you that don’t know, Gunz is a free to play. online third person shooter. It’s similar to games like Counter Strike where you choose a class, choose your loadout and duke it out with other players on an online server. The mechanics in Double Action Boogaloo feel very similar to Gunz but overall, it’s a better experience. Sure you don’t get to wield a katana but sliding on the ground while shooting a guy running past you feels much better. Maps are large and feature many places that you can hop, jump, dive, skip and roll off of. Imagine John Wick meets The Matrix.

Overall, the game is extremely fun. I’ve run into a few instances where I ran into glitches but I’ll attribute those to Source mod servers.

I’ll give this game an 8/10. Sharp visuals, addictive gameplay and multiple loadouts are what keep me coming back.
